Al-Mestkawi’s works depend on the worlds of architecture, design, sculpture and optical illusion, after he studied and practiced traditional sculptural arts at the beginning. He relied on dealing with light and shadow, with mass and surrounding space, as a treatment of the sculptural form with recognized techniques using the symmetrical forces of engineering and organic capabilities. But he did not stop in his contemporary sculptural works at the elements that meet the needs of traditional sculptors. He pushed the limits of the possibilities of his sculptural works towards special installation processes that deal with the space between visual arts, design and architecture, making it difficult to classify and define the nature of his works: are they sculptures or installations? On a conceptual level, we can confidently say that El-Mestikawy’s works have assimilated art, design, and architecture from the ancient Egyptians, through Islamic arts, to contemporary art philosophies. An interesting aspect of his artistic practice is his insistence on working with paperboard and managed paper, every element of his work, from the initial sketches to the final art product to the art portfolio made of items made by the artist himself
