Mohamed Banawy
(Egyptian, b. 1977) was born in Al Sharqia. He studied painting and mosaics at the Faculty of Fine Arts and the University of Helwan. Towards his senior year he joined the Mural Painting department to gain design, mosaic, and stained glass skills. He is currently best known for his mosaics but he is not limited to that medium and has a wide range of skills. He is a member of the Fine Artists Syndicate. His father, the talented caricature artist was his first art teacher as he used to watch him paint people and landscapes. Banawy was able to create a distinctive style in a short period— his different textures and shapes creates a visual feast that encourages us to stop and look rather than simply gazing over it. He excelled in painting with oil pastel colors and distinguished by mastery in the mural art paintings, and sculptures that are done with stained glass, mosaics, ceramics, cement, sand, wood, polyester, clay, gold and silver leaf—these units are the Great Egyptian Heritage. He is inspired by the depth of Egyptian folk life like its old houses, the shops that are filled with smells of incense and spices, its popular folk markets with their traditional clothes, their lovable faces, and their body movements. He has done mural artworks for Maspero- the Egyptian radio and television building, Al-Ahram newspaper, and institutions in Cairo, Sharm El-Sheikh, and Dahab. He was the Commissaire of the Fine Arts Exhibition in Muscat, Oman in January 2012. He participated in the 1st International Symposium of Contemporary Mosaics at the Egyptian Academy of Art in Rome 2015; and most recently, the Commissaire of Pioneers Exhibition of Fine Arts Lovers Society in 2017. He has participated in many exhibitions, biennales and events locally and internationally such as; « the 28th Edition of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts » in 2003; « the Egyptian Contemporary Art Exhibition » in 2004; « Venice Carnival of Photography » in 2006; his solo Exhibition in « Gezira Art Center » in 2010; « Manises International Biennial » Spain 2011; and the most recently, « the 2nd International Symposium of Contemporary Mosaics » at the Egyptian Academy of Art in Rome 2018. Besides his honors and awards; « the State Artistic Creativity in Mural Art » at the Egyptian Academy of Art in Rome 2006; his mural mosaic art project “the Valley” which represented the Egyptian pavilion in « the 25th Edition of Venice International Biennale of Arts “La Biennale di Venezia” » in 2013 was chosen among the top five mosaic artworks in the world.; « Ravenna International prize for Contemporary Mosaics » in 2015; and most recently, « State Encouragement Award for Mural Art » in 2018.
