Hassan El Shark
(Egyptian, b. 1949, d. 2022) was a self taught southern Egyptian folk artist who wawa born in the small village of Zawyet Sultan in El Minya where he lived and worked until he passed away in 2022. El Shark was the eldest son of the village butcher and he began painting as a young boy using palm tree fiber, his father’s wrapping paper and paint that he made himself using spices from the local spice shop. His work depicts life in southern Egypt and is known for his vibrant colors.
