George Bahgoury
(Egyptian-French, b.1932) was born in Bahgora, a small village in Nag Hammadi, Upper Egypt which holds strong significance to the Coptic community.
His family name is an ode to his hometown meaning “coming from Bahgora.” In 1953, he began his career as a political cartoonist, publishing in Sabah Al Khair and Rose El Youssef. In 1955 as his interest in art increased, he decided to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Zamalek, under the guidance of the Egyptian artist Hussein Bikar which embedded in him the need to pay it forward and support younger generations. In 1970, he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. As a result, in 1975, he decided to focus on his solo career and stopped publishing as a cartoonist.
Bahgoury is considered one of the Middle East’s icons. His career spans 70+ years and his work has been exhibited locally and worldwide in Egypt, Iraq, England, France, Morocco, Finland, Germany, Italy, Sudan, France, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Spain, Syria and Jordan.
