Ali Desouky
(Egyptian, b. 1937, d. 2019) was one of the pioneers of using the batik technique in Egypt. He said that he was greatly influenced by ancient Egyptian art and the frescoes of Pharaonic temples as well as Coptic icons, but his first inspiration was from Islamic art and architecture. The neighborhoods of Old Cairo represent the main source of inspiration as he was born in Al-Azhar district and lived in a religious atmosphere. As a result, Al-Azhar lives in his sub-conscience and heavily influences his art.
