Al-Hussein Fawzy

(Egyptian, b. 1905, d. 1999) is a pioneer of graphic art in Egypt and is considered one of the leaders of the second generation on whose shoulders the contemporary Egyptian artistic movement was built. Fawzy was born in the New Helmeya neighborhood in Cairo. In 1922 he joined the School of Fine Arts without the knowledge of his father. He started drawing for the press in 1924 in “Al-Shabab” magazine. His mastery of drawing realistic, elaborate lines and his control over his tools distinguished him. He was especially skilled at drawing human figures. After his graduation in 1926 he participated in an oil painting competition whose prize was a scholarship to study abroad. He won the first prize to go to Paris in 1929 and enrolled in a studio "Fougerat" and then at the "Ecole de Estienne." There he learned the art of prominent engraving on wooden blocks, lithography and recessed engraving in metal plates for printing purposes. He continued in this school for three consecutive years during the evening shift, in addition to studying photography and decorative arts.
