Sanaa ElBissy
Egyptian, b. 1937

Sanaa Elbissy (b. 1937, Cairo) is a leading Egyptian journalist, author, and artist. She began her career at Akhbar Al-Youm in 1954 and later held senior roles at Al-Ahram, where she founded the women’s magazine Nisf Al-Dunya in 1990.
A talented painter and caricaturist, she held her first solo exhibition in 1972 and served as art consultant for the World Bank in 1979. She’s received numerous awards, including the Cultural Achievement Award (2024) and a Lifetime Achievement Award (2025). Elbissy is known for blending art and literature in her work and for compiling a major
encyclopedia of artists.
