Farouk Shehata
Egyptian, b. 1938
Farouk Ibrahim Shehata (1938–2017) was one of the pioneers of graphic art in Egypt and the Arab world. Born in Alexandria, he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1962 and later earned his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Germany, attaining his professorship with distinction. He held prominent academic and cultural positions, including Professor and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Alexandria University, and Cultural Counselor at the Egyptian embassies in Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia with the rank of Minister Plenipotentiary.
Shehata represented Egypt in major biennales and international exhibitions across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and held more than 40 solo exhibitions in Egypt and abroad. His works are housed in leading institutions such as the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Graphic Library in Paris, and museums in Berlin, Munich, and Dresden. He was awarded prestigious honors, including the State Incentive Award (1988) and the State Merit Award (2006), as well as gold medals from heads of state and international cultural institutions. Farouk Shehata left an enduring legacy as a key figure in modern Egyptian art, with his name recorded in major global art references such as Mayer’s Art Dictionary and the Russian Encyclopedia.
